The Istanbul Environment Friendly City Award aims to recognize and reward the efforts of local authorities to improve the environment and the quality of life and promote sustainable development in Mediterranean coastal towns and cities. It also aims to encourage local authorities to move towards a more environment friendly future and enable them to act as a role-model to inspire other towns and cities.
The Members of the Bureau of the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention have approved the short list of three eligible applicant cities, based on inputs by the Technical Committee -- which gathers the Task Force (representatives of the MAP components) supported by three independent experts selected by the Steering Committee of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development.
The three following Mediterranean coastal cities have been short listed:
- Crikvenica, Croatia
- Izmir, Turkey
- Tel Aviv - Yafo, Israel
As per the nomination and selection process approved by the 83rd meeting of the Bureau, the short listed cities are now subject to an electronic public voting that will provide a final ranking. Based on this ranking, the Jury –composed of the Bureau Members and the President of the MCSD Steering Committee– will select the winning city through electronic means. Finally, the Award will be conferred during COP20 (Tirana, Albania, 17-20 December 2017).
The public voting has just been launched for a period of two weeks until the 21st of November 2017. Please use the following link to access the relevant platform dedicated to the public consultation:
